Notes
This monograph was the product of several years' research, interviews and photographs in Kosovo and Macedonia. The book explores the aftermath of war and hidden trauma through tensions between image and text. It reworked traditional documentary coverage of war, and focused on the war's aftermath and the memory of traumatic events. The driving concept behind the book was to use the text to empower the subject and disrupt the objectification that can accompany photographic portraiture. The photographs were therefore employed alongside individual testimonies to question one-dimensional media portraits of Kosovar refugees prevalent at the time. Interviews were carried out across different ethnic groups to obtain a plurality of accounts, although for some individuals it was too dangerous to be identified through photographic portraiture. Several individuals were documented both before and after the war. The book has been very widely reviewed in the UK and USA. Selected print reviews (see Portfolio) include: Source (Republic of Ireland), Katalog (Denmark), The Progressive (USA), Library Journal (USA), Booklist (USA), The Independent (UK). Part of the work has recently been reproduced in Home Cultures (Berg, Vol. 4, issue 1, March 2007).
