Contemporary Perspectives: Sartre, Clooney, McCarthy, Murakami
chapter
posted on 2023-06-07, 23:48 authored by Benedict O'Donohoe, Roy ElvetonThe argument is for the continued contemporaneity of Sartre in dialogue with later artists whom he has either explicitly influenced (Murakami) or whose treatment of certain themes sheds light on Sartre's own work in the same area. In the latter instance, George Clooney's successful movie "Good Night, and Good Luck", which fortuitously appeared at the same time as a fragment of Sartre's unfinished play on the McCarthy era, provides some illuminating comparisons with Sartre's unsuccessful approach to the same theme. In the former instance, Murakami's short story, "Nausea 1979", deliberately invites parallels with Sartre's famous novel and sheds light both on the enduring value of Sartrean concepts such as contingency and bad faith, and on the fashionable Japanese novelist's technique and his debt to an admired European master.
