Abstract

This paper first briefly summarizes the findings of a study of the mid-career learning of professionals, technicians and managers in the health, engineering and business sectors funded by ESRC's research programme on The Learning Society. This is followed by a discussion of the findings of a recently completed longitudinal study of the Early Career Learning at Work of newly qualified nurses, graduate engineers and trainee chartered accountants. Finally, it discusses the implications of these projects and other related research for learning in higher education.

Additional Information: This article describes the empirical findings and evolving theoretical frameworks of two substantial ESRC funded projects led by the author. The projects studied mid-career and early career learning at work in three professional areas, and created new theoretical frameworks to handle the questions of what and how people learned at work. This paper gives special attention to the project's Two Triangle Model of the interacting learning factors and context factors affecting the learning of early career accountants, engineers and nurses; and to the implications of the findings for the practical components of Professional Education and its handling of the interaction between theoretical and practical knowledge. This work, together with the SKOPE monograph (item 4), is both theoretically original and of high practical relevance. It has attracted large audiences at international conferences and has led to invited visits to 8 countries covering 4 continents.
