Abstract

This is a peer reviewed article in an international journal, based on a longitudinal study of student mothers on a primary teacher training course in England. It presents a comparative study of two groups of student mothers at the start and end of the 1990s, with a focus on gender issues. The study investigated the extent to which the students could draw on their experiences as mothers to positive effect in their training, combining public and private spheres. All the women possessed considerable skills, particularly in working with young children, which were an attribute in their training. Although both groups faced difficulties such as the double burden of domestic and course work, the more recent students could cross the boundaries between public and private spheres more easily than those at the start of the 1990s. The findings are analysed within the dual frameworks of gender in higher education and initial teacher education.

Additional Information: This article makes a significant contribution to knowledge about mature women student teachers over a ten-year period from 1990 to 2000. Based on empirical research, original findings from a longitudinal, comparative study of two groups of student mothers are presented with an emphasis on student voice. Feminist methodological and theoretical frameworks are used to focus on gender issues in higher education and initial teacher education and explore the boundaries between public and private spheres of work. Positive advantages as well as potential problems and barriers faced by mature women entrants to teaching are highlighted. The study makes an important contribution to debates on widening participation and the gendered nature of teaching. The findings have been disseminated at national and international conferences.
