Additional Information: This paper illustrates the interdisciplinary nature of the ion beam research at Sussex with the novel application of ionoluminescence analysis to the study of minerals. This was one of several papers resulting from an EPSRC grant 'New Approaches to High Sensitivity Ion Beam Luminescence Analysis' and international collaboration. As co-investigator, my contribution to the research was to manage the design and development of the facilities, provide the ion beams for analysis and assist with the acquisition and interpretation of the data. Additional research is planned, building on and developing this technique which has several applications including petrography and mineral exploration.
